　　根据古代的传说，众神选择一些树得到他们的特别保护。“众神之父”朱庇特选择的是橡树，维纳斯选择了香桃木，阿波罗比较偏爱月桂树，库柏勒的选择是松树，赫尔克勒斯决定维护杨树。看到他们选择的都是不会结果实的树木，密涅瓦感到很奇怪，就问他们为什么这样选择。

　　朱庇特回答说：“我们是不想贪图果实的荣誉！”但是密涅瓦还是不理解，说：“不要去在意别人的评价。我喜欢的依旧是果实累累的橄榄树。”听了她的话，朱庇特说：“女儿啊，你才是真正的聪明。假如我所做的一切没有成果，那荣誉也是徒劳的。”

　　朱庇特答应了他们的请求，但是要求从今往后恶要和自己同伴一起拜访人类，而善必须一个一个去。从此之后，恶总是成群结队的，而善则总是单个地降临到人们身上。

　　恶习是对他们自己的惩罚。

　　一个过路人赶了很久的路，饿极了，筋疲力尽地倒在井边睡着了。就在他差一点要掉到井里的时候，命运女神出现了，对他说：“亲爱的先生，你赶快醒来吧！如果你不小心掉入了井里，那么我就要承担保护不力的骂名了。因为人类总是把灾难归咎于我，而从不检讨自己的行为。”

　　朱庇特回答狮子说：“你不应该来责怪我，我已经做了力所能及的一切，只不过是你的性格太软弱，没有足够的勇气罢了！”狮子听了朱庇特的解释，不断责备自己太胆小无能，为自己的悲惨命运痛哭流涕，最后决定一死了之。他就这么想着往前去，正好遇到了一头大象。他们就停下来相互交谈。在谈话的过程中，狮子发现大象一直摇晃着他的大耳朵，便问：“你怎么啦?为什么要经常扇动你的耳朵呢?”这时，恰好有一只蚊子围着大象的耳朵嗡嗡乱叫。大象指着蚊子对狮子说：“你看，我扇动耳朵就是为了防备这些小家伙的。别看他们个头不大，一旦钻进我的耳朵，我可就没命了。”

　　听了大象的话，狮子恍然大悟：“我应该比大象更幸福才是。我还有什么可抱怨的呢？”

　　一位农夫在河边砍柴，不小心把斧头掉入了河中。丢掉维生工具的农夫坐在岸边失声痛哭。这时，赫耳墨斯出现了，听了农夫的讲述后非常同情他，表示愿意帮助他找回丢失的斧头。于是，赫耳墨斯一头扎进河中，一会儿之后，取出了一把金斧头，问农夫是不是他的，农夫摇摇头。赫耳墨斯又潜入了水中，这次带上来的是一把银斧头，农夫依旧摇头说，不是他丢掉的那把。赫耳墨斯只好第三次下水，这次拿上来一把锈迹斑斑的铁斧头。农夫欣喜若狂，说这正是他丢掉的那把。为了奖励农夫的诚实，赫耳墨斯把剩下两把斧头也送给了他。

　　回到家后，农夫把他的经历一五一十地告诉了他的朋友。其中有一个人非常羡慕农夫的好运气，就想照样试一试。于是他也拿了一把斧头在河边砍柴，故意将斧头丢入河中，然后装出很伤心的样子放声大哭。没过多久，赫耳墨斯果然出现了。听了他的不幸经历后，赫耳墨斯马上就潜到水中为他寻找斧头。一会儿之后，赫耳墨斯拿着一把金斧头上来了。那人一看就使劲点头，兴奋地大叫这正是他的斧头。赫耳墨斯对他的贪婪非常失望，不仅没有把金斧头送给他，还把他原先的那把也没收了。

　　一天，兔子嘲笑腿短、跑不快的乌龟。乌龟不服气地说：“尽管你可以跑得像风一样快，但是我依然可以在比赛中打败你！”兔子不以为然，觉得乌龟是根本不可能取胜的。于是。她接受了乌龟的挑战，并达成协议：由狐狸来选择并确定终点。到了比赛那天，乌龟和兔子一起出发了。乌龟不敢有丝毫松懈，一直努力地向前爬。而兔子却躺在路边睡大觉呢。她醒来之后，拼命地追赶乌龟。可这时，乌龟已经到达了终点，正在悠闲地散步呢。

　　狮子看到一只熟睡的兔子，正想把她吃掉时，忽然瞥见有一头雄鹿匆匆经过。于是，狮子就丢下兔子去追雄鹿。兔子被响声惊醒，急忙逃走了。过了好长时间，狮子仍然无法顺利追赶到雄鹿，只好返回来寻找在睡梦中的兔子。当他跑回原来的地方时，发现兔子已经逃走了。两手空空的狮子失望地说：“我真是自作自受啊!竟然放弃可以轻易到手的猎物，而去追求希望渺茫的东西。”

　　当一群兔子意识到自己是多么胆小的时候，他们伤心极了，决定集体跳进一个很深的池塘中，结束这屈辱的生命。于是，他们结伴来到池塘边。在岸上的青蛙听到他们的脚步声，吓得马上跳进了池塘里。看见这样的情景，一只兔子对他的同伴说：“等一下，伙伴们，你们都看见了，既然世界上还有比我们更怯懦的动物，我们又何必因此投水呢？”

　　世界上总会有不如你的人，不要因为自身的缺点就放弃希望。
